A Global career
I have just returned from HFW's Melbourne office where I spent the last six months working in their Insurance team. During this time, I predominantly worked on high-value insurance disputes - one of which was worth billions of dollars. I also worked on significant matters that arose whilst I was in Melbourne. This included the devastating bushfires that swept across Australia, as well as, the early stages of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Given that Australia's constitution is one of a federal system, it was particularly interesting getting to grips with various aspects of the law as different rules apply to the state in question. This certainly heightened my awareness of attention to detail as I was often dealing with matters in various parts of the country.
The transition to working on the other side of the globe was an easy process given the hospitality of the Melbourne team. Not only are the people great, but the views from the office make it pretty special too. The office is located in the heart of the CBD, which contains top-notch eateries and coffee shops. Friday night drinks in the office kitchen is a staple, which is music to anyone's ears after a busy week at the office.
Experiencing Australia during their summertime was fantastic. From football games (which is very different from what we know to be 'football') to food festivals, there was always something to keep you busy in your downtime. I lost count early on in my secondment as to how many brunch spots I had ventured to. I also managed to explore outside Victoria; travelling to: Port Douglas; Cairns; Alice Springs; Sydney and Byron Bay!
My time in Melbourne was a memorable one. Not only was the work interesting, but I also made some life-long friends in the process.
